In a community-focused effort to strengthen housing awareness, Save The People USA (STPUSA) joined Organize NYC and the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs for a door-to-door canvassing initiative in Jamaica, Queens.
The outreach brought volunteers directly to residents, where they shared important information about rent stabilization, tenant protections, and upcoming public hearings. The initiative was designed to help ensure that community members understand their housing rights and know how to take part in decisions that may affect their neighborhoods.
Representing STPUSA, Imam Muhammad Shahidullah, CEO of Save The People USA, and Fatima Niass, Office Manager of STPUSA, were present alongside other volunteers and community partners. Their participation reflected the organization’s ongoing commitment to civic engagement, housing stability, and direct community service.
The canvassing effort highlighted the importance of meeting residents where they are. For many tenants, housing rules and public processes can be difficult to navigate. By providing information directly at people’s doors, volunteers helped make civic participation more accessible and practical.
The collaboration between STPUSA, Organize NYC, and the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs also underscored the value of partnerships between community organizations and city offices. Together, they worked to connect residents with resources, encourage public involvement, and promote housing stability.
Beyond distributing information, the initiative helped build trust between residents and local advocates. It reminded families that they have a voice in housing discussions and that public hearings are opportunities to raise concerns and seek accountability.
As housing affordability remains a major issue across New York City, outreach efforts like this play an important role in empowering communities. In Jamaica, Queens, the canvassing initiative showed how organized, local action can help residents better understand their rights and participate more fully in civic life.
