A state of emergency was declared in British Columbia after the fast-moving Bald Range wildfire doubled in size within days, sweeping across more than 39 square miles of timberland and residential areas.
The aggressive blaze triggered the region’s largest evacuation event this summer, forcing more than 20,000 residents to flee their homes across several communities, including Summerland and Peachland. British Columbia Premier David Eby stated that fire officials likened the sudden explosion of the inferno to a bomb going off, noting that intense heat created localized weather systems and lightning.
Emergency crews worked tirelessly around the clock to suppress the flames as properties and farmland sustained severe damage. Officials reported that changing wind patterns left some residents temporarily trapped, requiring urgent rescue operations.
The formal emergency declaration grants provincial authorities temporary special powers, including the enforcement of travel restrictions and protection against supply price gouging. Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes warned that local communities must brace for severe structure losses as containment efforts remain ongoing.
