Hillside Education Center completed a three-day kids camp designed to help children build character, strengthen family connections, and practice positive values through learning and group activities. The program brought children together for a series of sessions centered on personal responsibility, kindness, honesty, and community support.
During the camp, organizers introduced the theme of “BUILDING UP” character, encouraging children to think about who they are and how they act when no one else is watching. In a public message shared during the program, the center explained, “That means who we are and what we do even when no one else is looking!”
The lessons used simple, practical examples children could apply in daily life. Organizers encouraged participants to put toys away without being asked, tell the truth even when they might face consequences, think kindly about others, and return valuable items found on the floor. These examples gave children a clear understanding of honesty, responsibility, and respect.
The camp also expanded its focus from personal character to family relationships. One session invited families to continue the “BUILDING UP” theme by exploring ways children and adults could support one another at home. The gathering was scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Captain Tilly Park, near the Highland Avenue side.
Save the People USA (STPUSA) supported the camp through volunteer service throughout the program. On the final day, rain affected the outdoor plans, and STPUSA provided indoor space so the activities could continue. The support helped organizers avoid canceling the closing session and gave children and families a safe place to complete the camp.
The three-day program reflected a shared effort between Hillside Education Center and STPUSA to provide children with lessons extending beyond the classroom. By combining character education, family engagement, and community support, the camp gave participants practical tools for making thoughtful choices and treating others with care.
The final day also showed how local organizations can work together when unexpected conditions arise. With volunteer help and a space secured during the rain, the camp concluded its program while keeping its central message in focus: strong communities begin with character, family, and everyday acts of responsibility.
