The Muslim community in Shirley, Long Island, marked a historic milestone as Shirley Masjid held its official groundbreaking ceremony for what is expected to become the second-largest mosque on Long Island.

The ceremony took place on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at 516 William Floyd Parkway, Shirley, NY 11967, where families, community members, local leaders, and supporters gathered to celebrate the long-awaited project. Doors and lunch opened at 11:30 a.m., followed by the formal program at 12:00 p.m.

After years of planning, fundraising, and community dedication, the groundbreaking represented a major step forward for Muslims living in Shirley and surrounding Long Island communities.

The new mosque is expected to serve as a prayer space, classroom facility, library, gymnasium, and community support center. According to information shared about the project, the facility is intended to serve Muslims across nearby areas while also operating programs such as food support and community assistance.

The celebration included remarks from local elected officials and community leaders, along with a family-friendly atmosphere featuring vendors, clothing stalls, arts and crafts, and complimentary food. Registered guests received free meal tokens through a collaboration with The Halal Guide, which coordinated food from The Hub and Terry & Yaki food trucks.

The event also highlighted the importance of building institutions that respond to the needs of a growing Muslim population. For many attendees, the project represented visibility, belonging, and a stronger foundation for future generations.

Organizers welcomed longtime supporters as well as those learning about the project for the first time, emphasizing that the masjid is meant to be a space for worship, education, service, and community connection.

As construction begins, the Shirley Masjid project stands as a significant moment for Long Island’s Muslim community, reflecting years of perseverance and a shared commitment to building a welcoming institution that will serve families for generations to come.
