U.S. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries joined Muslim community leaders, families and volunteers at Baitul Mamur Masjid and Community Center for a back-to-school program that placed educational support and direct community engagement at the center of his visit.
The September 6, 2026 event was organized by MUNA Social Services, an initiative connected with the Muslim Ummah of North America (MUNA). Organizers distributed 600 new backpacks and essential school supplies, helping 600 students prepare for the new academic year. The Turkish Cultural Center supported the initiative by providing backpacks and school supplies, while volunteers and community supporters helped carry out the distribution.
Jeffries took part in the program as children and families received the donated items. Photos from the event showed the House Democratic leader standing alongside organizers and community representatives at tables filled with packaged backpacks. The gathering brought together the practical work of preparing students for school with an opportunity for one of the nation’s senior congressional leaders to engage directly with members of the local Muslim community.
After participating in the back-to-school activities, Jeffries visited Baitul Mamur Masjid, where he met with community members and religious and organizational representatives. The visit gave attendees an opportunity to welcome the congressional leader inside the mosque and marked another part of a day centered on community connection. MUNA Social Services later expressed appreciation for Jeffries’ presence, as well as for the organizations, volunteers and supporters involved in the program.
For families, the central outcome was immediate. Hundreds of children left with backpacks and supplies for the school year. For MUNA Social Services, the event also reflected its broader community-service work by bringing local organizations, volunteers and residents together around students and education.
The presence of Hakeem Jeffries gave the gathering added significance, connecting a neighborhood back-to-school effort with national political leadership. His participation in the distribution and subsequent visit inside the mosque also provided a setting for direct interaction between an influential elected official and the Muslim community served by Baitul Mamur Masjid and Community Center.
