Community members and public officials gathered in solemn remembrance during a Candlelight Vigil honoring Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, a proud Queens native who gave her life while serving in Jordan. Held on Monday, July 27, 2026, the vigil brought together residents, veterans, faith leaders, and elected officials to pay tribute to her courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to serving her country.
The event, hosted by the Ozone Park Residents’ Block Association, took place at the corner of 96th Street and 133rd Avenue in Ozone Park, Queens, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Participants gathered in prayer and reflection while offering their support to Sgt. Rampersad’s family during a time of profound loss.
Among those in attendance were Congressman Gregory Meeks, Congresswoman Grace Meng, New York State Attorney General Letitia James, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr., New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Assemblymember Clyde Vanel, and Councilmember Ty Hankerson. They were joined by veterans, community leaders, and local residents who stood together to recognize Sgt. Rampersad’s service and the sacrifices made by military families.
The vigil emphasized not only the life of Sgt. Rampersad but also the strength of the community that gathered to honor her memory. Organizers invited everyone to stand in solidarity with her loved ones, describing the gathering as an opportunity for the community to express its gratitude for her service and to remember the sacrifices made by both Sgt. Rampersad and her family.
Also present was Imam Muhammad Shahidullah, CEO of Save the People USA (STPUSA), who joined fellow community leaders in prayer and remembrance. According to STPUSA, the organization was honored to participate in the vigil and reaffirmed its commitment to honoring fallen heroes, supporting veterans, and standing beside families who have experienced the loss of a loved one in service to the nation.
The evening concluded with a shared message of remembrance, unity, and gratitude. As candles illuminated the gathering, the community reflected on the enduring legacy of Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, whose dedication and sacrifice continue to inspire those who knew her and the many others who came together to honor her life.
