A vision years in the making became reality as community leaders and members of the Bangladeshi-American community gathered in Scotchtown, New York, to celebrate the inauguration of the Scotchtown Bangladesh Cemetery, a landmark project expected to serve generations of Muslim families across the United States.
The inauguration ceremony took place on June 20, 2026, at 247 Connors Road, Scotchtown, New York, marking the official opening of what organizers describe as the largest cemetery project established by Bangladeshis outside Bangladesh. Developed by The Greater Noakhali Society USA Inc., the cemetery represents a major investment in community infrastructure and religious services for Bangladeshi and Muslim families living in North America.
Spread across approximately 126 acres, the cemetery has been designed to accommodate more than 100,000 graves, making it one of the most ambitious Muslim burial projects in the region. Organizers noted that the site has been developed in full accordance with Islamic burial practices and traditions, providing families with a dedicated space that respects religious requirements while serving the needs of a growing community.
The project traces its origins to the acquisition of the property in December 2024. Infrastructure development officially began on July 31, 2025, with extensive preparations undertaken to transform the land into a large-scale cemetery capable of serving future generations. The inauguration marked the completion of a major phase of that effort and signaled the beginning of operations at the site.
Community members attending the event described the cemetery as more than a burial ground. For many, it represents a lasting legacy of community cooperation, planning, and commitment to preserving Islamic traditions for future generations. The project also addresses a practical need, as Muslim communities throughout the region continue to seek burial facilities that fully accommodate religious rites and customs.
Organizers announced that while the facility officially opened with the inauguration ceremony, burial services are expected to commence on July 1, 2026. The opening has been welcomed by families across New York and neighboring states, many of whom view the cemetery as an important resource that will provide dignity, accessibility, and continuity for years to come.
As attendees gathered to mark the occasion, the inauguration stood as both a celebration of achievement and a reflection of the community’s long-term vision. With its vast capacity and dedicated purpose, the Scotchtown Bangladesh Cemetery is poised to become a significant institution for Bangladeshi-Americans and the broader Muslim community throughout the region.
