Peace Timeline Disputed

Alexandar Sullivan:

President Donald Trump said a deal to end fighting between the United States and Iran was scheduled to be signed on Sunday, though Tehran signaled uncertainty over the timing.

Writing on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump said the agreement would lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. “The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL,” he wrote.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei urged caution, saying officials would have to wait for the exact signing date and adding that it would “not be tomorrow.” A Qatari delegation later arrived in Tehran as mediation efforts continued.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the sides were closer to a peace deal than ever, with electronic signing expected within 24 hours.

The proposed agreement follows months of conflict that began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, followed by Iranian attacks and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
