Lammy Rebukes Vance

Alexandar Sullivan:

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy said he called U.S. Vice President JD Vance to tell him he was “wrong” to link the murder of Henry Nowak to mass migration.

Nowak, an 18-year-old British student, was fatally stabbed by Vickrum Digwa in Southampton last December. Digwa, who is British-born, falsely claimed he had been racially abused and acted in self-defense. He was later jailed for life.

Vance wrote on X that Nowak’s death reflected the failure of European leaders to resist what he called a “mass invasion of migrants.” Speaking to the BBC, Lammy said he told Vance the killing “has got nothing to do with mass migration.”

Lammy described the conversation as “robust” but “agreeable,” adding that he reminded Vance that Nowak’s family had called for calm. Nowak’s father, Mark Nowak, previously said the family did not want the killing used to create “division, hatred or tension.”

The case has sparked debate in the UK over policing, knife laws and anti-racism guidance after officers handcuffed Nowak as he lay dying.
