Alexandar Sullivan:
Two senior Republican lawmakers have criticized the Pentagon’s decision to withdraw 5,000 US troops from Germany, warning that the move could weaken deterrence in Europe and send the wrong signal to Russia.
Sen. Roger Wicker and Rep. Mike Rogers, who lead the Senate and House armed services committees, said the troops should be moved farther east rather than removed from Europe. In a joint statement, they argued that reducing America’s forward presence before European defense capabilities are fully strengthened risks undermining NATO security.
The Pentagon said the decision followed a review of “theater requirements and conditions on the ground.” President Donald Trump later suggested deeper cuts could come, saying the US would reduce forces beyond the initial 5,000.
Germany’s defense minister Boris Pistorius called the decision “foreseeable” but said the American military presence remains in both German and US interests. NATO said it is seeking more details from Washington.
The withdrawal comes amid renewed tensions between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as well as broader concerns that US force reductions could strain transatlantic unity during Russia’s war in Ukraine.
