An Evening of Faith and Fellowship at Nassau County Police Department

Ashley Reed:

In observance of the Holy Month of Ramadan, the Muslim Officers Society (MOS) of the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) recently hosted a dignified interfaith Iftar gathering that brought together officers, community leaders, and distinguished guests from diverse backgrounds. The evening reflected a shared commitment to unity, inclusion, and mutual respect.

The program opened with welcoming remarks from MOS President Shakhawat Hafiz, who serves in the department’s 6th Precinct. He spoke about the spiritual significance of Ramadan, describing it as a time of self-discipline, compassion, and reflection. He emphasized that the event was not simply a meal to break the fast, but a meaningful opportunity to strengthen understanding and solidarity among law enforcement and the broader community.

The successful coordination of the event was led by MOS Vice President Mohammed Rahman, also of the 6th Precinct, whose efforts helped ensure a seamless and welcoming atmosphere. Throughout the evening, speakers highlighted that the lessons of Ramadan—tolerance, accountability, empathy, and service—resonate far beyond the Muslim community and serve as universal principles that support effective civic engagement.

A special awards segment recognized individuals for their leadership and dedication. Patrick Ryder received the Founder Recognition Award for his support of diversity and inclusive leadership within the department. Mufti Nazrul Islam was honored with the Raees Leadership Award for his outstanding community contributions, while Mufti Mohammad Farhan, PhD, received the Light of Guidance Award in recognition of his scholarly and spiritual leadership.

The evening concluded with prayers for peace, safety, and prosperity for the nation and communities throughout Nassau County, New York. Attendees expressed optimism that such gatherings would continue to foster collaboration and trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

Organizers reaffirmed their commitment to hosting similar initiatives in the future, underscoring that the message of brotherhood and unity embodied in Ramadan remains essential in strengthening relationships across faiths and professions alike.
