Unity in Action: Iftar Supplies Distributed on Hillside Avenue

James Anderson:

In a heartfelt show of unity and compassion ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, Save the People USA and Jamaica Bangladesh Friends Society organized a large-scale food distribution in the Hillside Avenue area of Jamaica, New York. The initiative, part of their ongoing humanitarian efforts, aimed to support underprivileged and fasting families as they prepared to welcome Ramadan.

Alhamdulillah, the organizations were able to serve more than 500 families, distributing between 500 and 750 essential food items. The groceries included oil, onions, potatoes, flour, pasta, macaroni, pineapple, apples, dates, lentils (dal), and carrots—staples intended to help families prepare suhoor and iftar meals.

More than 10 youth volunteers and community members participated in the distribution and cleanup efforts, ensuring the event was conducted in an organized and respectful manner. Despite the busy environment, volunteers reported receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from families who expressed gratitude for the timely support on the eve of Ramadan.

Fatima Niass, Program Manager and Administrator of Save the People USA, helped oversee and manage the distribution process alongside dedicated volunteers. Imam Muhammad Shahidullah, CEO of Save the People USA, was also present and actively participated in the event, reinforcing the organization’s hands-on commitment to community service.

Organizers emphasized that the primary goal of the initiative was to stand beside disadvantaged members of the community in the spirit of Ramadan—an occasion that calls for generosity, compassion, and solidarity. They expressed hope that similar humanitarian efforts would continue in the future.

Local residents praised the initiative, noting that such efforts strengthen community bonds and reflect the true values of the blessed month. Through unity and service, the event demonstrated how collective action can make a meaningful difference in the lives of many.
