Hijab, Identity, and Understanding

Ashley Reed:

In a meaningful celebration of identity and inclusion, Elhaam Academy proudly observed World Hijab Day 2026 on campus, bringing together students, staff, and community leaders to highlight the significance of the hijab and the principles of respect and religious freedom it represents.

The event featured remarks from Imam Shaheed Farooqi and Officer Frances of the NYPD’s 107th Precinct, both of whom addressed the importance of understanding, dignity, and community support. Their presence underscored a shared commitment to the protection of personal freedoms and fostering respectful dialogue in a diverse society.

Throughout the program, the focus remained on solidarity with Muslim women, and the broader need for education around cultural and religious practices. Attendees were encouraged to reflect on the role of the hijab as more than just a garment—recognizing it as a symbol of faith and personal conviction for many.

Students and faculty expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn and engage in thoughtful conversation, especially in a setting that affirmed their experiences and identities. The gathering also served as a reminder of the Academy’s commitment to equity, empowerment, and respectful community building.

Elhaam Academy’s observance of World Hijab Day contributed to a growing citywide and global movement focused on uplifting the voices of Muslim women and championing freedom of expression in all forms. Events like these continue to serve as vital platforms for increasing awareness and promoting unity across differences.

As the program concluded, attendees left with not only a deeper understanding of the hijab’s role in Muslim life but also a stronger sense of shared humanity—an outcome that reflects the heart of Elhaam Academy’s educational mission.
